It is a semi-autonomous region, which means it has some power to govern itself. This area is made up of four main parts called governorates. These are Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Halabja. Erbil serves as the capital city for the whole region.

The regional parliament is also located there. The region sits near the borders of Turkey, Iran, and Syria. It is part of a much larger area known as Iraqi Kurdistan.

The land in this region looks very different depending on where you stand. In the north and northeast, the land is filled with high mountains. These mountains are especially tall near the borders of Turkey and Iran.

If you travel toward the center or the south, the mountains fade away. Instead, you will see rolling hills and flat plains. A river called the Great Zab flows through a valley in the north. The climate is semi-arid, which means it is often quite dry. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold and wet.

History shows that the Kurdish people have worked for many years to govern themselves. Before Iraq became an independent state in 1923, people began struggling for independence. Leaders like Mustafa Barzani played a very important role in this movement. Throughout the 20th century, the Kurds moved between fighting for more power and fighting for full independence. There were many difficult times, including wars and harsh actions by the central government in Baghdad. In 1991, after the Gulf War, new rules helped create a space for Kurdish self-governance.

Many specific dates and groups have shaped the region's story. In 1975, a group called the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan was founded by Jalal Talabani. Later, the Kurdistan Democratic Party became another very important group. In 1992, the first Kurdish elections were held after the region gained autonomy. The Iraqi government officially recognized it as a "federal region" in 2005.

In 2014, the region faced a new challenge when the Islamic State invaded. During that time, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces took control of several disputed areas. In 2017, the region held a referendum to talk about independence.

Today, the region is a place where people work the land and build a democracy. The weather allows for many types of farming. Most rain and snow fall between November and April. This water helps people grow winter crops and summer fruits.
