It is the largest city on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Based on 2020 data, the population was 548,014 people. This makes it the 12th largest city in the country. Kuantan is a vital hub for government, trade, and tourism.

The climate in Kuantan follows a tropical rainforest classification. This means the weather generally follows two distinct seasons. The first is a hot season that is not truly dry. During this time, seasonal south-west winds blow from Sumatra. These winds are blocked by the Titiwangsa Mountain Range. Temperatures during this period may reach 40 degrees Celsius. The second season is the rainy season from October to March.

North-east winds bring heavy rain and many clouds. This rainfall can lead to flooding near the Kuantan River. Flooding can also affect the road leading to Sungai Lembing.

Kuantan has a very long and complex history. In the first century, the area was part of the Chih-Tu empire. The Pheng-Kheng empire conquered the land in the 11th century. Later, the Siamese ruled the region during the 12th century. By the 15th century, the Malaccan Empire held control. The modern settlement was founded in the 1850s. It was originally known as Kampung Teruntum.

Haji Senik and his followers established this village. Early residents focused on fishing and small businesses. Evidence of this era remains in a local cemetery.

The city's administration has changed many times over the years. It was once managed by the Kuantan Sanitary Board from 1913 to 1937. It then became the Kuantan Town Board until 1953. Later, it functioned as the Kuantan Town Council and the Kuantan Municipal Council. On 21 February 2021, Sultan Abdullah declared it a full-fledged city. The local authority was then renamed the Kuantan City Council. The state administrative center moved from Kuala Lipis to Kuantan in 1955. This move was officiated by Sultan Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al Muadzam Shah.

Today, the economy is diverse and growing. Tourism is a major activity for the region. Visitors enjoy Teluk Cempedak beach and various waterfalls.

The area is also known for batik and keropok, which are dried fish crackers. Heavy industry is located in the Gebeng area, about 25 km north. Many large petrochemical companies operate in this industrial zone. Kuantan is also part of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER). Specifically, it is part of the ECER Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This zone covers 390,000 hectares. It aims to generate RM90 billion in investments. It also seeks to provide over 90,000 new jobs.

Kuantan features several impressive landmarks and natural sites. The Kuantan 188 tower is a very famous structure. It stands 188 meters tall and was completed in 2019. The design was inspired by a spear head.

Visitors can now explore a Tin Museum there. The city also offers large theme parks like Bukit Gambang Resort City. This resort spans 547 acres and includes a massive wave pool.

Urban development continues to shape the future of Kuantan. The city is part of the larger Kuantan Port City project. This includes the expansion of Kuantan Port and the Kuantan Industrial Park. The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will connect Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan. This rail line also passes through Bentong and Temerloh. New developments like the Kuantan Waterfront Resort City are also planned. These projects aim to strengthen the connection between Indochina, India, and China.
