Finding these fossils was a big job for many people. In 1931, a team from Harvard went on an expedition to Australia. They wanted to find many kinds of animals. A man named William E. Schevill led the team. They found a famous skeleton that is now mostly made of plaster.

Kronosaurus was a massive genus of extinct marine reptiles. These animals belonged to a group called pliosaurs. They lived during the Aptian and Albian stages of the Early Cretaceous period.

This was a time when a large body of water called the Eromanga Sea covered much of Australia. This ancient inland sea was quite cold. It often reached temperatures close to freezing. Because of its size and power, Kronosaurus was likely an apex predator. This means it sat at the very top of the food chain in its environment.

The anatomy of Kronosaurus was specialized for life as a hunter. Like other plesiosaurs, it possessed four paddle-like limbs known as flippers. The back pair of flippers was larger than the front pair. For the largest individuals, these limbs created a wingspan exceeding 5 meters.

Its body featured a short neck and a very long head. The front of the skull was elongated into a structure called a rostrum, or snout. A key feature was the mandibular symphysis. This is the area where the front ends of the two lower jaw bones, or mandibles, fuse together. This elongated section held up to six pairs of large, cone-shaped teeth. The teeth at the front of the mouth were larger than those in the back. These tools were perfect for consuming large prey.

Scientists have studied the diet and behavior of these reptiles through fossil evidence. Kronosaurus likely hunted sea turtles and other types of plesiosaurs. Its bite force was incredibly powerful. Estimates suggest the bite force reached between 15,000 and 17,000 Newtons.

However, the sea was a competitive and sometimes violent place. Fossil evidence from a juvenile specimen shows it may have been attacked by an adult. This suggests intraspecific aggression, which is fighting between members of the same species. It could even point to cannibalism. Kronosaurus also faced interspecific competition from other predators. One specimen shows bite marks that may have come from a shark similar to Cretoxyrhina.

The history of discovering Kronosaurus began in the late 19th century. In 1899, a partial jaw bone was sent to the Queensland Museum in Australia. The zoologist Charles De Vis first examined this specimen, cataloged as QM F1609. He initially thought it belonged to an ichthyosaur, specifically Ichthyosaurus australis. However, the unique teeth led to a different conclusion. In 1924, Albert Heber Longman formally described the specimen as a new pliosaur. He named it Kronosaurus queenslandicus. The genus name means "lizard of Kronos," referencing the Titan from Greek mythology.

In 1931, a major expedition was launched by the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard. The team included several experts, such as William E. Schevill and paleontologist William Morton Wheeler. This Harvard Australian Expedition aimed to collect many types of specimens. While the Queensland Museum could not join due to funding issues, Longman assisted the team. Schevill traveled to the Rolling Downs geological group to find fossils. He discovered two large pliosaur specimens in the Wallumbilla Formation. One specimen, MCZ 1285, had been found earlier by a rancher named Ralph William Haslam Thomas. Thomas had noticed strange objects emerging from the ground in a horse enclosure.

The extraction of the Harvard specimens was a massive undertaking. To remove the fossils from their rock, a specialist nicknamed "The Maniac" used explosives. The fossils were packed into 86 crates, weighing a total of 1,100 kilograms.

These were shipped to the United States aboard the SS Canadian Constructor in December 1932. Once at Harvard, it took years to remove the fossils from the limestone. This delay was caused by a lack of money, space, and workers. The specimen, MCZ 1285, is a well-known skeleton that has been heavily restored in plaster. It is sometimes called "Plasterosaurus" because of this reconstruction.

Modern science has corrected some early ideas about Kronosaurus. For a long time, the Harvard skeleton was thought to be much larger than it actually was. This was because the skeleton had been reconstructed with too many vertebrae. Recent research from the early 2000s has corrected these estimates. Scientists now believe the animal was likely between 7 and 10 meters long.

Additionally, the classification of the genus has evolved. Since 2013, phylogenetic studies place Kronosaurus within the subfamily Brachaucheninae. This is a lineage of many different pliosaurids that lived throughout the Cretaceous period. By studying these fossils, we continue to learn how these giants ruled the ancient seas.
