It sits next to Victoria Harbour. It faces Hong Kong Island. The land is south of several mountain ranges. These hills include Lion Rock and Kowloon Peak.

This place has a long history. In the year 1287, an emperor hid in a cave here. He was fleeing from a leader named Kublai Khan. Later, many people used the land to find safety. In 1860, Britain took control of the area. Back then, only 800 people lived there.

The land has changed over time. People used land reclamation to make it bigger. This means they took land from the sea to make more ground. They did this in many parts over many years. One area was Hung Hom Bay. By 2019, that bay was gone because of this work.

An old airport called Kai Tak was also in Kowloon. Large planes used to fly over the city to land there.
