Korean Wave

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Korean Wave, known by the term hallyu, describes the rapid global spread of South Korean popular culture. The word hallyu is a neologism, which is a newly created word. It combines the root han, meaning Korean, and ryu, meaning wave or trend.

This phenomenon includes television dramas, pop music, films, and fashion. It also extends to animation, video games, literature, cosmetics, and food. Today, hallyu is recognized as a significant form of soft power. It is also a major economic asset for South Korea. The country generates massive revenue through cultural exports and tourism.

The movement is often divided into distinct historical stages. The first generation, or hallyu 1.0, began in the late 1990s. This stage was mostly confined to nearby Asian countries. It was driven primarily by the popularity of Korean television programming and films.

The second generation, called hallyu 2.0, expanded much further. This stage is driven by K-pop music distributed on online platforms like YouTube. Social media and global internet platforms helped the industry reach audiences worldwide. This digital shift allowed the culture to move far beyond the Asian continent.

To understand hallyu, one must look at the history of South Korean media. For many years, the country lived under military dictatorships. During the rule of Park Chung Hee, the government used strict censorship. The Broadcasting Ethics Committee controlled what appeared on radio and television. In 1980, the regime of Chun Doo-hwan forced private broadcasters to merge. This created a state-led media monopoly through KBS and MBC. However, the end of military rule and the liberalization of the industry changed everything. The 1997 Asian financial crisis also played a role. Broadcasters in East Asia sought cheaper programming during this difficult time. In 2000, K-dramas were only a quarter of the price of Japanese programs.

The rise of the film industry followed a similar path of change. In 1966, the government used screen quotas to protect local films from Hollywood. By 1988, US pressure led the government to lift these restrictions. This allowed major American studios like Disney and Warner Brothers to enter the market. In 1994, domestic films hit a record low market share of 15.4 percent. To fight this, the government passed the Motion Picture Promotion Law in 1995. This law provided tax incentives for film production. These incentives helped increase film budgets significantly. Average production costs rose from 0.9 billion won in 1995 to 42 billion won by 2004.

Specific cultural products helped define the wave's success in different regions. In 1999, Chinese journalists coined the term "Korean Wave" to describe the zeal for Korean pop songs. The romance drama Winter Sonata became a massive success in Japan. It created a cult following and changed Japanese stereotypes of Korea. Another major hit was the historical drama Jewel in the Palace. In 2005, its final episode became the highest-rated in Hong Kong history. It reached a rating of more than 40 percent.

In the modern era, the scale of hallyu has reached unprecedented levels. K-pop groups like 2NE1, BTS, and Blackpink have gained massive global followings.

The film Parasite won an Oscar in 2019. The Netflix series Squid Game also became a major global success. These examples show how the wave has moved from regional television to global digital dominance. The influence is even seen in high-level diplomacy. For example, BTS met with US President Joe Biden in the Oval Office.

Ultimately, hallyu connects to broader economic and political systems. The South Korean government supports the industry through the Ministry of Culture. This support has helped link culture to the country's export-driven economy. In 2012, the government estimated the value of hallyu to be US$83.2 billion. The movement shows how media can transform a nation's global image. It turns cultural products into a bridge between different worlds. What began as a local trend is now a permanent part of the global landscape.
