There are five different classes of train services provided by KORAIL. The highest class is the KTX, which stands for Korea Train eXpress. These fast trains run on the Gyeongbu and Honam high-speed lines. Next are the ITX services, which are intercity trains. The ITX-Saemaeul is one group of these trains. A newer version called the ITX-Maum was introduced in late 2023.

Regional services include the Mugunghwa-ho trains. These trains are named after the hibiscus, which is the national flower.

The history of these trains began many years ago. Before 1963, a bureau managed the railway network. On September 1, 1963, this became the Korean National Railroad, or KNR. In 2003, KNR began using a blue logo. The government then decided to split the agency into two parts. On January 1, 2005, KNR became KORAIL. This new company took over the actual train operations. A separate group called Korea National Railway was formed to build and fix the tracks.

KORAIL also runs metro services in large areas. These trains help people move through the Seoul and Busan metropolitan areas. These services work with local subway systems. This allows passengers to transfer between lines for free.

Some trains are even made for tourists. These are called sightseeing trains, such as the Sea Train or the V-Train. Travelers from other countries can use the KR Pass. This pass lets them ride most KORAIL trains freely.

Connecting railroads between North and South Korea is a big goal. In the past, lines like the Gyeongui Line ran into North Korea. In 2018, officials began surveys to reconnect these tracks. They looked at the Gyeongui Line and the Donghae Line. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Kaesong on December 26, 2018. This event was meant to symbolize the reconnection of the two lands. People even used a KORAIL train to travel to the ceremony.

KORAIL, officially the Korea Railroad Corporation, is the national railway operator in South Korea. It is a government-owned corporation managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation. Headquartered in Daejeon, KORAIL is a vital part of the nation's infrastructure. The company operates a wide variety of services, including intercity, regional, and commuter metro trains. It also manages freight transportation throughout the country.

KORAIL provides five distinct classes of railway and metro services. The highest tier is the KTX, or Korea Train eXpress. These high-speed services run on the Gyeongbu and Honam high-speed lines, along with branches like the Gyeongjeon and Donghae lines.

Next are the ITX, or Intercity Train eXpress, services. This group includes the ITX-Cheongchun and the ITX-Saemaeul. In late 2023, KORAIL introduced a new ITX model called the ITX-Maum. Regional services are provided by the Mugunghwa-ho and the planned Nuriro services. The Mugunghwa-ho takes its name from the hibiscus, the national floral emblem of South Korea.

Urban railway services, often called metro services, are managed by KORAIL in the Seoul and Busan metropolitan areas. These services are integrated with local subway fare systems. This integration allows passengers to make free transfers between KORAIL lines and local metro lines. One major corridor is Seoul Line 1, which includes several KORAIL lines like the Gyeongbu and Gyeongin lines.

KORAIL also operates specialized sightseeing trains for tourists. These include the Sea Train, the V-Train, and the S-Train. For foreign travelers, the KR Pass allows free travel on most KORAIL trains, though it excludes subways and tourist trains.

The history of the South Korean railway began with the Railroad Administration Bureau. Before 1963, this bureau managed the entire network under the Ministry of Transportation. On September 1, 1963, it became an agency known as the Korean National Railroad, or KNR. In the early 2000s, the government decided to corporatize KNR. In 2003, KNR adopted its current blue logo to prepare for this change. On January 1, 2005, KNR was split into two separate entities. KORAIL succeeded as the operator of railway services. Meanwhile, the Korea National Railway (KR) was created to focus on railway construction and track maintenance.

Financially, KORAIL faces significant challenges. The company has reported annual losses for the last decade, with 2015 being the only exception. In 2021, KORAIL reported a deficit of 1.1081 trillion won. The cumulative deficit reached 18.66 trillion won by the end of 2021. This financial difficulty is partly due to fare structures. Rail fares have remained frozen since they were increased by 4.9% in 2011. Because of these factors, KORAIL received an E grade, meaning extremely unsatisfactory, in the 2021 public institution management evaluation.

KORAIL's relationship with North Korea is a complex subject involving international history. Before the division of Korea after the Second World War, lines like the Gyeongui and Gyeongwon lines extended into North Korea. In 2018, officials began surveys to reconnect these lines. These surveys included inspecting the Gyeongui Line and the Donghae Line. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Kaesong on December 26, 2018, to symbolize the reconnection of the railways.

While some freight service was attempted on the Gyeongui line in 2007, it was often underutilized. Many companies preferred using road transport instead of rail for cargo.

Looking toward the future, there are ongoing discussions about broader regional connections. A Trans-Korean Main Line is being planned to span North Korea and eventually connect to Russian Railways. While a tunnel under the Korean Strait to connect South Korea and Japan has been proposed since 1917, it remains in the research phase. Currently, there are no direct railway connections between South Korea and Japan. KORAIL also manages several subsidiaries to support its main operations. These include Korail Networks for ticketing, Korail Retail for advertisements and convenience stores, and Korail Tour Service for train crews.
