It shows a Soviet military officer during World War II. The officer holds a TT pistol in his hand. He is raising his unit to begin an attack. This picture is one of the most iconic Soviet photos from the war. People find it important because it captures a very intense moment. It shows the skill and leadership needed during a hard time.

How the photo was made is still a bit of a mystery. The photographer was Max Alpert. He gave different versions of when the photo was taken. He said it might have been between autumn 1941 and 1943. The title "Kombat" means "commander of a battalion." Alpert likely chose this name after hearing a message. He overheard that "the kombat is killed." He then linked that message to the man in his photo.

History tells us a possible story about the man in the frame. For a long time, no one knew his name or the exact date. One widely accepted version says the man was a political commissar. A commissar is a type of leader in a military unit. His name was likely Yeryomenko. This happened on 12 July 1942. The location was Voroshilovgrad Oblast, which is now Luhansk Oblast in Ukraine.

In this version of events, Yeryomenko was helping his unit. The original commander of the unit was wounded in battle. Yeryomenko took command to help his men. He raised the unit for a counterattack against a German offensive. This was a very brave act. Sadly, he died within minutes of leading the attack.
