It is even found on Cuban coins and banknotes. Some experts say the image acts like a global symbol or a hieroglyph. It seems to reappear whenever there is a conflict in the world.

Taking the photo was a very quick and lucky moment.

The photographer, Alberto Korda, only saw Guevara for a few seconds. He used a Leica M2 camera with a 90 mm lens. He was using Kodak Plus-X pan film at the time. Korda captured only two frames of Guevara before he disappeared from view. The photographer said the shot was not about skill or technique. Instead, he believed it was a matter of pure luck and coincidence.

The photo was taken on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba.

Korda was there for a memorial service at the Colón Cemetery. This service honored people who died in an explosion on a ship called the La Coubre. At that time, Guevara was 31 years old and served as the Minister of Industry. He appeared wearing a jacket and a black beret. The beret had an inverted five-pointed brass star on it. Korda noticed Guevara's facial expression looked very firm and serious.

After the photo was taken, it became a way to spread ideas. Korda did not ask for money or royalties when people used his work. He felt that the more the image spread, the more Guevara's ideals would spread too. However, Korda did take legal action in the year 2000. He sued a company for using the image to sell vodka. He believed Guevara would not have supported such a product. Korda donated the $50,000 from that settlement to the Cuban healthcare system.

In Cuba, the image became even more famous after Guevara died in 1967.

After his death, a large version of the photo was draped on a building in Havana. This building was the Ministry of the Interior in the Plaza de la Revolución. Today, a permanent steel outline of the photo is on that building. The image also traveled to Italy through a publisher named Giangiacomo Feltrinelli. He used thousands of copies to raise awareness about Guevara's situation. This helped the portrait reach people all over the globe.
