It started as a way to move away from heavy glass plates. Instead, the company helped create flexible rolls of film. This made it possible for anyone to take pictures.

The company is based in Rochester, New York. It is also incorporated in New Jersey. Kodak became a huge part of how people recorded their lives. Their famous phrase, "Kodak moment," described special events worth saving forever.

It was a simple box with a lens on the front. To take a photo, you used a pull-string to set the shutter. Then, you pressed a button on the side.

This action exposed the celluloid film inside the box. After the shot, you turned a key to move the film. The camera came with a roll of 100 pictures. You could mail the camera to Rochester for processing. The company would then send back your prints and a new roll.

By May 23, 1892, the company was officially named Eastman Kodak. Eastman even helped invent the name "Kodak." He and his mother used an anagram set to find it. He wanted a name that was short and easy to say.

By 1922, they were the second-largest buyer of silver in the United States. This was because film requires silver to work. The company also built large research labs in 1912.

These labs helped invent new things like Kodachrome color film. In 1930, Kodak was even added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. This showed how important the company was to the economy.

Today, the company looks very different than it did in the past.

In the late 1990s, Kodak faced hard times due to digital cameras. Even though they invented early digital sensors, they struggled to switch. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2012.
