For a long time, Germany was not one single country. Instead, it was split into many tiny pieces. People used the word Kleinstaaterei to describe this.

This word means a land broken into many small states. Some states were very small. Some were only as big as one town.

Many things caused this split. Families often divided their land among many children. This made the map look like a messy puzzle. Some lands were not even touching each other.

This made life hard for many people. It was difficult to trade goods. Every small state had its own money and rules.

Things began to change in the 1800s. A leader named Napoleon helped join some pieces together. Later, a man named Otto von Bismarck helped more. He worked to build a unified German state. In 1871, the German Empire was finally formed. This made Germany a major power in Europe. Most of the tiny states were gone by then.
