Kip Stephen Thorne is a famous American astrophysicist and author.

He spends his time studying the deepest secrets of space and time. His work focuses on how gravity works in the universe. He is a leading expert on black holes and gravitational waves. These waves are tiny ripples that move through space and time. Because of his important work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017. He shared this prize with two other scientists named Rainer Weiss and Barry C. Barish.

Thorne is most famous for his work with the LIGO project. LIGO stands for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory.

He helped start this huge project in 1984 to find gravitational waves. The project works by measuring tiny changes between different points. In September 2015, LIGO finally caught a real signal. It was the sound of two black holes colliding far away. This happened 1.3 billion light-years from our home. This discovery proved that the big ideas of general relativity were correct.

Thorne's journey into science started in Logan, Utah.

He was born there on June 1, 1940. His parents were both very smart professors. His father taught soil chemistry at Utah State University. His mother was an economist and was the first woman to get a PhD in economics from Iowa State College. Thorne was a great student in high school. He won an award called the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He later studied at Caltech and Princeton University to become a physicist.

He has spent many years teaching at the California Institute of Technology, or Caltech. He was one of the youngest full professors there at age 30.

During his career, he has mentored about 50 different physicists. Many of his students are now leaders in science themselves. He also wrote many books to help people understand the stars. One of his famous books is called Black Holes and Time Warps. He even helped make science feel real in movies like Interstellar.

Thorne also studies very strange ideas like wormholes.

A wormhole is a short path that connects two far-away parts of space. He has looked into whether these could be used for time travel. While he studies these big ideas, he stays focused on real math and physics. He has worked with famous scientists like Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan. He loves to explain how the universe works to everyone. His work helps us see the invisible parts of our amazing cosmos.
