The city grew into a major trading center. It was once a place for fishing and whaling. It also served as a military supply port. Later, it became a large industrial metropolis.

History shows that Hull was often at the center of big events. During the English Civil War, it was a place of battle. The city had a large arsenal of weapons. This made it very important to both sides. In the 18th century, William Wilberforce lived here. He was a Member of Parliament. He helped to end the slave trade in Britain.
