This land was not one solid piece at first. It stretched from the Brandenburg area to lands near the Baltic Sea. The capital city of this growing state was Berlin. A powerful family called the House of Hohenzollern ruled the land. They worked hard to turn their territories into a strong kingdom.

Building the kingdom was a step-by-step journey. It started with the lands of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia. These two areas were ruled together as Brandenburg-Prussia. In 1701, Frederick I became the first "King in Prussia."

He chose this special title because of legal rules. He was only a king in the Prussian lands. In his other lands, he was still an elector. This helped him lead his people while following the law. Over time, the kingdom grew much larger and more unified.

Many leaders helped Prussia grow into a great power. One famous leader was Frederick the Great. He ruled from 1740 to 1786.

Prussia also changed how Germany looked. For a long time, many small German states lived separately. Prussia wanted to bring them together under one rule. There were many questions about whether Austria should join them. After several wars and many years of change, Prussia led the way. In 1866, they formed the North German Confederation.
