He was the last ruler of his family to hold the title of King in Prussia. People often call him Frederick the Great or "Old Fritz." He grew up in a very difficult home. His father was King Frederick William I, a man with a violent temper. The king wanted his son to be a soldier. However, young Frederick loved music, philosophy, and French culture.

This difference in interests led to many fights between father and son.

Frederick's early life was marked by hard lessons in leadership. His father even punished him for his love of books and music.

One very sad event happened when Frederick tried to flee to Britain with a friend named Hans Hermann von Katte. The plan failed, and Frederick had to watch Katte be executed. This was a heavy burden for the young prince. After this, he was forced to study how to run a government. He learned about statecraft and administration in a place called Küstrin. These lessons helped him prepare for his future role as a ruler.

When he finally became king, Frederick changed the map of Europe.

He was a very skilled military leader. In 1742, he attacked and took the rich province of Silesia from Austria. He also helped lead the First Partition of Poland in 1772. These victories made Prussia a major military power. Frederick wrote books about how to lead armies using strategy and movement. He used his own experience on the battlefield to teach others. His leadership helped Prussia grow much larger than it was before.

Frederick also believed in a way of ruling called enlightened absolutism.

He said a ruler should be the "first servant" of the state. This meant he worked to make the government run better. He made the legal system fairer for more people. He also encouraged people from different backgrounds to move to Prussia. Even though Protestantism was the main faith, he allowed religious freedom. He let Jews and Catholics live in his lands. He even allowed people to have more freedom with books and the press.

Frederick spent much of his time at his favorite palace, Sanssouci.

He died in 1786 and was buried there. His nephew, Frederick William II, became the next king. For a long time, many historians saw him as a great warrior. Later in history, his reputation changed as different leaders used his name. Today, most historians see him as a very capable monarch. They admire how he built the foundation for Prussia to become a great nation. His work in culture and government left a lasting mark on the world.
