Kim Larsen was a prominent Danish singer, songwriter, author, and guitarist. He became a central figure in Danish rock music through his various bands and solo work. Larsen was known not just for his melodies, but for his role as a protest singer. He often used his platform to advocate for the right to be different from the mainstream. His music frequently addressed his opposition to established society. This sense of individuality defined much of his artistic identity and his connection to the public.

Larsen's musical career began in 1968 after he worked briefly as an elementary school teacher. In 1969, he co-founded the rock group Gasolin'. The band featured Larsen on vocals and rhythm guitar. Other members included Bjørn Uglebjerg and Søren Berlev on drums. Gasolin' became one of the most successful rock bands in Denmark. They released several studio albums, including Gasolin' 1 through Gasolin' 5, before the group dissolved in the late 1970s. This period established Larsen as a major force in the Danish music scene.

Following the end of Gasolin', Larsen transitioned into several different musical phases. In 1979, he competed in the Danish stage of the Eurovision Song Contest. His song "Ud i det blå" earned third place out of 17 participants. Around 1980, he moved to New York to pursue an American career. He released two albums in the United States, but he did not achieve a major breakthrough there. He eventually returned to Denmark, where his solo career reached new heights. In 1983, his album Midt om natten topped the charts and served as a soundtrack for a film of the same name.

Larsen continued to lead various musical groups throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1983, he formed the band Kim Larsen & Bellami. This group released four albums before breaking up in 1992. After a brief solo period, he founded Kim Larsen & Kjukken in the mid-1990s. This band was based in Odense and remained a significant part of his work. Throughout these years, Larsen maintained a prolific output of studio albums and live recordings. His discography includes many successful releases like Gammel hankat and Sange fra glemmebogen.

Larsen often used his songwriting to honor history or challenge authority. In 1986, he released the hit song "Jutlandia." This song served as a tribute to the MS Jutlandia, a Danish Red Cross hospital ship. The ship provided important services during the Korean War. Larsen also used music to voice political disagreements. He was critical of Danish anti-smoking laws and even funded an advertising campaign in 2008 to protest them. He also used his personal identification number as the title for his 1979 album, 231045-0637. This was a symbolic protest against large citizen databases.

In the final years of his life, Larsen faced serious health challenges. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the end of 2017. This diagnosis affected his scheduled tour with Kim Larsen & Kjukken in early 2018. He communicated with his fans via Facebook, apologizing for any inconvenience caused by the cancellations. Larsen passed away at his home in Odense on 30 September 2018. His death marked the end of a career that spanned five decades of Danish cultural history.

His impact on Denmark was demonstrated by the massive scale of his public remembrance. One week after his death, a large memorial concert took place in Copenhagen. Approximately 35,000 people attended the event to honor his memory. Major Danish musicians, including The Minds of 99 and Tim Christensen, performed cover versions of his songs. These performances highlighted how his work had become woven into the fabric of the nation. Larsen's life and his commitment to social individuality continue to be studied through his music and his biography, Mine unge år.
