Kim Jong Un is the supreme leader of North Korea. He holds several of the nation's most powerful positions. He serves as the general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). He is also the president of the State Affairs Commission. Additionally, he holds the highest offices within the North Korean military. His leadership maintains a cult of personality around his family. This means the state uses media to show great devotion to him. State media often refers to him as "Respected Comrade" or "Marshal."

His rise to power is part of a long family dynasty. He is the grandson of Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea in 1948. He is also the son of Kim Jong Il, the previous leader. Kim Jong Un is the third supreme leader of the country. He is the second of three children born to Kim Jong Il and Ko Yong Hui. He is notably the first leader to be born a North Korean citizen. His predecessors were born in the Soviet Union or during the Japanese colonial period.

Much of Kim's early life was spent outside of North Korea. He reportedly lived in Switzerland starting in the early 1990s. He attended the International School of Berne and the Liebefeld-Steinhölzli school. During this time, he used names like "Chol-pak" or "Pak-un." Classmates described him as a shy student who loved basketball. He was a fan of the American National Basketball Association (NBA). He even made meticulous pencil drawings of Michael Jordan.

After his time in Switzerland, Kim returned to North Korea for education. He attended Kim Il Sung University between 2002 and 2007. There, he earned a degree in physics. He also attended the Kim Il Sung Military University to become an army officer. By 2009, he was clearly seen as the successor to his father. Following Kim Jong Il's death in 2011, state television called him the "great successor." He quickly assumed many high-ranking leadership posts.

Kim has introduced new policies that changed how North Korea operates. He moved away from his father's "Songun" or military-first policy. Instead, he promoted a "people-first policy" and a renewed commitment to communism. He also revived the "pyŏngjin" policy. This is a plan for the parallel development of the economy and the military. Under this policy, he has focused heavily on the nuclear weapons program. He has overseen the four most recent nuclear tests and many missile tests.

His actions have led to significant international tension. His missile tests, including an intercontinental ballistic missile, caused friction with many nations. This led to the 2017–2018 North Korea crisis involving the United States, China, and South Korea. However, Kim has also participated in historic diplomacy. In 2018 and 2019, he attended summits with several world leaders. He met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump. These were the first meetings between a North Korean and a U.S. head of state.

In recent years, Kim's foreign relations have shifted toward Russia. In June 2024, he signed a security and defense treaty with Russia. He has also supplied Russia with materiel for the Russo-Ukrainian war. In October, North Korean soldiers were sent to assist Russian units in the Kursk campaign. He also maintains a relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping. These connections show how North Korea remains active in global political systems.
