The Khmer Rouge was a group that ruled Cambodia.
They ruled from 1975 to 1979. Their leaders included Pol Pot and Nuon Chea. The group wanted to change how the country worked. They wanted to make a new society based on farming.
To do this, they forced people to leave big cities. They also tried to stop the use of money. They wanted the country to be self-sufficient. This means they wanted to rely only on themselves.
These rules caused great harm. Many people died from hunger because of new farm rules. Others died from sickness because there was not enough medicine. The leaders also killed many people they did not like. They targeted people who were educated or from different groups. This period was a genocide. It caused the deaths of 1.5 to 2 million people. This was about one-fourth of all people in Cambodia.
In 1979, Vietnam invaded and took away their power. The group fought for many more years. Most members finally gave up by 1999.
The Khmer Rouge was a group of communist leaders who ruled Cambodia.
They controlled the country from 1975 to 1979. This group was also known as the Communist Party of Kampuchea. They wanted to create a brand new society. They wanted to change everything about how people lived. This group was very powerful and controlled all parts of life. Their rules were very strict and hard for people to follow.
The leaders wanted a country based only on farming. They called this a system of agrarian socialism. They wanted to get rid of money and private property. They also wanted to stop all trade with other lands. The leaders believed the country should be self-sufficient. This meant Cambodia would rely only on its own strength. To do this, they forced people to leave big cities. They moved everyone into the countryside to work in fields.
The group rose to power after a long civil war. They fought against the Khmer Republic, which was led by Lon Nol. The Khmer Rouge won in 1975 after capturing the capital city. Their main leaders were Pol Pot and Nuon Chea. Other leaders included Ieng Sary, Son Sen, and Khieu Samphan. The group received much help from China during this time. In fact, China gave them about 90 percent of their foreign aid.
Life under the Khmer Rouge was very difficult and dangerous. Their new farming rules caused a huge famine. Many people died because they did not have enough food. They also stopped using modern medicine. This caused many people to die from diseases like malaria. The regime also killed people they thought were enemies. They targeted educated people and different ethnic groups. This period was a genocide that killed 1.5 to 2 million people.
The Khmer Rouge lost their power in 1979. This happened when Vietnam invaded Cambodia. The group fled to Thailand to keep fighting. They continued to fight for many years until 1989. Most of the group finally surrendered by 1999. Later, courts helped find justice for what happened. In 2014, leaders Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan were jailed for life. This was done by a special court backed by the United Nations.
The Khmer Rouge was the name given to the members of the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK). This group ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. They established a state called Democratic Kampuchea. The term "Khmer Rouge" is French for "Red Khmers."
The group was led by several key figures. These included Pol Pot, Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Son Sen, and Khieu Samphan. They aimed to completely transform Cambodian society through extreme social engineering.
The Khmer Rouge rose to power through a violent civil war. In 1970, a coup d'état led by Lon Nol established the Khmer Republic. This new government was pro-American. The Khmer Rouge fought against this republic in the forests of eastern Cambodia. They were supported by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and other regional forces. Despite a massive American bombing campaign known as Operation Freedom Deal, the Khmer Rouge won. They captured the capital city in 1975 and overthrew the Khmer Republic.
The regime followed a very specific and extreme ideology. They combined communist ideas with a fierce form of Khmer nationalism. This nationalism focused on the purity of the Khmer people. They also looked to the models of Stalinism and Maoism. The leaders believed that human willpower could overcome all physical and historical limits. They wanted to create a perfectly egalitarian society. This meant they sought to remove all differences between people. To do this, they abolished money, trade, and all private property.
To build their new society, the Khmer Rouge implemented agrarian socialism. They believed that the rural peasantry was the only true force for revolution. They viewed cities as parasitic and harmful to the nation. Because of this, they forcibly evacuated major cities. They moved the entire population into the countryside to work on collective farms. This process was part of a plan called "Moha Lout Plaoh." This was an imitation of China's Great Leap Forward.
The economic and social policies of the regime caused massive suffering. The government insisted on absolute self-sufficiency, or autarky. They rejected modern technology and international trade. They also stopped using modern medicine in favor of traditional methods. This led to many deaths from treatable diseases like malaria. Their agricultural reforms also caused widespread famine. The regime also targeted specific groups of people. They murdered Buddhist monks, educated elites, and ethnic minorities like the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cham.
The scale of the violence was immense. The Khmer Rouge conducted genocidal purges against their own members and perceived political enemies. They used torture and summary executions to maintain control. This period is known as the Cambodian genocide. It resulted in the deaths of 1.5 to 2 million people. This number represented about 25% of Cambodia's total population.
The regime's rule ended when Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1979. The Khmer Rouge fled to the border of Thailand. They continued to fight against the new government until 1989. The organization slowly dissolved through political changes and amnesties. In 1993, the monarchy was restored in Cambodia. Some leaders were eventually held accountable for their actions. In 2014, a United Nations-backed court found Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan guilty of crimes against humanity.
