Kherson Oblast is a province in southern Ukraine.
The land has a very long history. Many different groups have ruled it over many years. These include the Greeks, the Romans, and the Ottomans. Today, the city of Kherson is the main center. It is the only city with over 100,000 people.
Recent years have been very hard for the people here. Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022. Most of the province was taken by Russian forces. This led to a war that changed many lives. In 2023, a dam broke and caused big floods. Many people had to leave their homes because of the water. The area is still seeing many changes due to the war.
Kherson Oblast is a large province in southern Ukraine.

The land has seen many different groups rule it over time. Ancient Greeks and Scythians lived here long ago. Later, groups like the Byzantine Empire and the Mongol Empire held power. Other rulers included the Ottoman Empire, Poland, and Russia. In medieval times, towns like Oleshia were important trading ports. Another old town was Kazikermen, which is now called Beryslav.
In recent years, the region has faced very difficult times. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Russian forces took control of most of the province. In September 2022, Russia claimed to have taken the land through a disputed vote. However, most other countries did not recognize this claim. By mid-November 2022, Ukrainian forces retook the city of Kherson and the right bank of the river. The left bank of the Dnieper remains under Russian control. This conflict has changed the lives of everyone living there.
Life in the province is spread across many different towns. Kherson is the largest city with over 333,000 people. Other large cities include Nova Kakhovka, Kakhovka, Oleshky, and Henichesk. Many people live in urban areas, but many others live in small villages. In 2012, the total population was about 1,083,367 people. The population is mostly made up of Ukrainians and Russians. Some people also belong to the Crimean Tatar group. There are also small numbers of Belarusians and others.
Natural changes have also affected the people in this region. In June 2023, the Kakhovka Dam was breached. This caused huge floods that moved downstream through the province. Many people had to leave their homes quickly to stay safe. The Kakhovka Reservoir was also drained by this event.
Kherson Oblast is a significant province located in southern Ukraine.
The geography of the region is defined by its water systems and fertile land. The Dnieper River includes the Kakhovka Reservoir, which is a major body of water. Several bridges once connected the two sides of the river. These included the Kakhovka Bridge near Nova Kakhovka and the Antonivka Road Bridge at Kherson. Another important link was the Daryivka Bridge, which crosses the Inhulets River.
The history of this territory is marked by many different rulers. At various times, the land was ruled by the Scythia and ancient Greeks. Other groups included Old Great Bulgaria, the Khazars, and the Kipchaks. The Byzantine Empire, the Mongol Empire, and the Ottoman Empire also held power here. Other historical rulers included Lithuania, Poland, and Russia. In medieval times, Oleshia served as a major trading port. It was used by the Byzantines, Kyivan Rus', and the Genoese. Another important site was Tawan, also known as Kazikermen. This was a Lithuanian customs point and a Polish and Turkish fortress.
Modern history saw many shifts in control. Between 1917 and 1920, the territory was controlled by Ukrainians, Bolsheviks, and White Russians. It became part of Soviet Ukraine in 1920. The province was officially established in 1944 within Soviet Ukraine. During World War II, Germany occupied the area from 1941 to 1944. In 1991, a referendum was held regarding Ukrainian independence. In that vote, 90.13% of the people in Kherson Oblast supported the Declaration of Independence. A 2014 survey found that 90.9% of the population opposed joining Russia. This shows a strong historical connection to the Ukrainian state.
The region has faced extreme hardship due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This invasion began on February 24, 2022. Russian forces occupied most of the oblast during the early stages. In September 2022, Russia claimed to have annexed the oblast following a disputed referendum. Most states did not recognize this claim and called it illegal. The United Nations General Assembly demanded a complete Russian withdrawal. By mid-November 2022, Ukrainian forces retook the city of Kherson and the right bank of the Dnieper. However, the territory on the left bank remains under Russian control.
Human life in the oblast is concentrated in several key urban areas. Kherson is the largest city, with a population exceeding 100,000. Other significant cities include Nova Kakhovka, Kakhovka, Oleshky, and Henichesk. In 2012, the total population was 1,083,367 people. This represented about 2.4% of the total population of Ukraine. Most residents live in urban areas, which account for 61.5% of the population. The remaining 38.5% live in agricultural centers or villages. The population is diverse, with Ukrainians making up 82.0% and Russians making up 14.1%.
Natural disasters have also impacted the lives of those in the region. On June 6, 2023, the Kakhovka Dam was breached. This event caused extensive flooding downstream throughout the oblast. The breach also caused the Kakhovka Reservoir to drain. These floods forced many people to undergo mass evacuations to find safety.
