Many things can cause this. Tiny germs like bacteria or viruses can cause it. Some people get it from wearing contact lenses. For these people, bacteria cause 90% of cases. One type of bacteria is called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This germ makes enzymes that can digest the cornea.

Other germs can cause it too. Viruses like herpes simplex can cause it. This often makes a branching pattern in the eye. We call this a dendritic pattern.

Tiny living things called amoebas can also cause it. These are often found in tap water. It is very important to keep contact lenses clean. Do not store them in tap water. Using good care helps keep your eyes healthy.
