His work is deeply rooted in West Coast hip-hop traditions. He is widely recognized for his conscious and introspective lyrics. These songs often provide social commentary and political criticism regarding African-American culture. Many journalists and critics consider him one of the greatest rappers of all time. In 2018, he made history by winning the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

He was the first musician outside of jazz and classical genres to receive this honor.

Lamar's creative process relies heavily on his skills in songwriting and poetry. In middle school, his teacher, Regis Inge, introduced him to literary forms. This was a response to the racial tensions among his students. Lamar learned to use rhymes, metaphors, and double entendres in his writing. He found that putting his feelings on paper helped him make sense of them. This method allowed him to manage psychological trauma and depression during his adolescence. He often used his notebooks to scribe lyrics instead of completing school assignments.

His musical style involves blending hip-hop with various historical African-American genres. For example, his 2015 album, To Pimp a Butterfly, infused hip-hop with jazz, funk, and soul.

His second album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, was a major concept album. It became the longest-charting hip-hop studio album on the Billboard 200. This album was also named the greatest concept album of all time by Rolling Stone. Later, his fourth album, Damn, leaned more toward R&B and pop styles. This album featured his second US number-one single, "Humble."

Lamar's journey began in Compton, California, where he was born on June 17, 1987.

He grew up in Section 8 housing and experienced homelessness. His family relied on welfare and food stamps during his childhood. He was an only child until the age of seven. His parents, Kenneth and Paula, moved from South Side, Chicago, to Compton in 1984. Although he faced many hardships, he kept good memories of his childhood. These memories, such as attending house parties, sparked his early interest in hip-hop.

His professional career started during his time at Centennial High School.
