Kelp forests are busy underwater worlds that cover parts of the world's coastlines.

Even though they cover only a tiny part of the Earth, they are very productive. This means they create a lot of energy for other living things. These forests grow in cool, temperate, and polar coastal oceans. Scientists even found kelp in tropical waters near Ecuador in 2007. They act like underwater jungles that provide homes for many different creatures.

Each kelp plant has a special way it works to grow. It starts with a holdfast, which is a mass that grips the sea floor. Unlike real roots, the holdfast does not take in nutrients. A long stalk called a stipe grows upward from the holdfast. Leaf-like parts called fronds grow from the stipe to soak up light. Many kelps have pneumatocysts, which are tiny gas-filled bubbles. These bubbles act like little life jackets to keep the kelp floating upright.

Researchers have studied these forests for over one hundred years. They look closely at how animals eat and live together. This is called trophic ecology. Scientists study how energy moves from the kelp to the animals. They also look at how the physical shape of the forest helps life. For example, the top canopy is sunny, while the seafloor is dark. This creates different neighborhoods for different types of sea life.

Different kinds of kelp live in different places around the globe. The giant kelp, or Macrocystis, grows in the Pacific Ocean. It can grow as fast as 30 to 60 centimeters in a single day!

In the North Pacific, you might see rockfish and shrimp living in the stalks. You can also find seals, sea lions, and whales visiting the forest. In the northeastern Pacific, there is a huge variety of more than 20 kelp species. This area stretches from California all the way to Alaska.

Everything in the kelp forest is connected like a big web. Sea otters are a very important part of this web. They eat sea urchins, which are animals that like to munch on kelp.

If otters are not around, the urchin population can grow too large. Too many urchins will eat all the kelp and leave a bare landscape.

This shows how one animal can help keep the whole forest healthy and strong.
