Kelp forests are busy underwater worlds.

They grow in cool ocean waters near coasts. These forests are very productive. This means they make a lot of food for other life.

Kelp is a type of large algae. It has three main parts. First, a holdfast acts like a root. It grips the sea floor. It does not take in food, though. Next, a stipe grows up like a stem. Finally, fronds grow from the stipe. These look like leaves. They take in light to make food. Many kelp types have pneumatocysts. These are gas-filled bubbles. They help the kelp float toward the sun.

Many animals call the forest home. Rockfish swim through the stalks.

Seals and sea otters also visit. Sea otters are very important. They eat sea urchins. Without otters, urchins eat too much kelp. This can turn a forest into a bare space.

Keeping the balance helps the forest stay strong.
