Katowice is a major city located in southern Poland. It serves as the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship. The city acts as the central hub for the Katowice urban area. As of 2021, the official population was 286,960 people. However, resident estimates suggest around 315,000 people live there. The larger Katowice metropolitan area contains 2.5 million residents.
The city's growth was driven by a massive shift in its economy. In the mid-18th century, people discovered rich coal reserves in the area. This discovery triggered intensive industrialization during the first half of the 19th century. Local farms and mills transformed into steelworks, mines, and foundries.
Katowice has deep roots that reach back to the Middle Ages. While the name Katowice was first mentioned in a 1598 report, other nearby villages are much older.
Modern Katowice began to emerge through improved transportation and official status. In 1846, the final stage of the Breslau-Myslowitz railway line was completed.
The 20th century brought significant political changes and periods of hardship. After World War I, a plebiscite organized by the League of Nations decided the region's future. Although many in the city voted to remain in Germany, the larger district voted for Poland. Katowice became part of the Second Polish Republic. During World War II, the city faced a very difficult time under German occupation. Many historical monuments were destroyed, including the Great Katowice Synagogue.
The postwar years saw both rapid expansion and political shifts. Katowice became a major administrative and industrial center once again. Between 1953 and 1956, the city was even renamed Stalinogród to honor Joseph Stalin.

Today, Katowice is a global center for culture, business, and technology. It is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Music.
