Karl Schwarzschild was a brilliant German physicist and astronomer.

He was born on October 9, 1873, in Frankfurt am Main. As a child, he showed a deep interest in the stars. He was even a child prodigy. He published two science papers before he turned sixteen. He studied many subjects like music, art, and ancient languages. Later, he earned his doctorate in 1896. His life was full of big discoveries about the universe.

Schwarzschild is most famous for his work on gravity. In 1915, Albert Einstein introduced the theory of general relativity. This theory uses math to explain how gravity works. Einstein had only found an approximate answer to his own equations. While serving as a soldier in World War I, Schwarzschild found the first exact solution.

He used a special coordinate system to solve the math. This result is called the Schwarzschild metric. It describes the gravitational field around a single, round mass. His work is as important to gravity as other laws are to electricity. He even found the Schwarzschild radius. This is the size of the edge, or event horizon, of a black hole.

His life was not always easy. In 1914, he volunteered for the German army. He was over 40 years old at the time. He served as a second lieutenant in the artillery. While serving on the Russian front, he got a rare skin disease called pemphigus. This was an autoimmune disease, which means the body's defense system attacks itself. It was very painful. He had to leave the military in March 1916 to go home. He died on May 11, 1916, at the age of 42.

Schwarzschild did much more than just study gravity. He was an expert in many different areas of science. He worked on how stars are built and how light moves through them. He also studied how to take better photos of the sky. He created the Schwarzschild law to help measure starlight. This formula helped scientists see very faint objects in space.

He also studied the movement of planets and comets. His work helped build the foundation for modern astronomy. He even worked with famous scientists like David Hilbert and Hermann Minkowski.

We still remember Karl Schwarzschild today in many ways. Scientists named an asteroid, 837 Schwarzschilda, after him. There is also a large crater named Schwarzschild on the far side of the Moon. His ideas about black holes changed how we see the universe. Even though he thought his math was just a curiosity, it turned out to be very real. His son, Martin, also became a famous astronomer. Many of his scientific papers are kept in a special collection in Germany. His legacy lives on every time we look at the stars.
