Koch was in charge of several camps. He was the first leader at Buchenwald. He also led camps at Sachsenhausen and Majdanek. At Majdanek, he took money and valuables from Jewish people.

His wife was named Ilse Koch. People said she was very unkind to prisoners. She did not have an official job. But she used her power to cause harm.

Other leaders found out about Koch's bad actions. A man named Josias saw a name on a list. He realized Koch had ordered people to be killed. An SS judge named Konrad Morgen led a study. He found that Koch stole much money. He also found that Koch killed prisoners to hide his crimes.

In 1944, the Kochs were put on trial. Karl was sentenced to death. He was executed in April 1945. This happened one week before Allied troops arrived.

An old photo album was found later. It shows how the Sachsenhausen camp was built.
