Karl Marx was a German philosopher and economist who changed how people study history and society.

He is best known for creating Marxism, a collection of ideas about power and wealth. Marx focused on how different groups of people struggle for control over resources. His work explored the relationship between the people who own businesses and the people who work in them. These ideas influenced many political movements and shaped the modern world. Today, scholars use his theories to understand social structures and economic systems.

Marx developed a specific method called historical materialism to explain how societies change. This approach suggests that the way a society produces goods drives its history. He believed that economic systems create specific social classes. These classes often exist in a state of constant conflict. This conflict is the engine that moves history from one stage to the next. By looking at these tensions, Marx aimed to predict how future societies would form.

In his analysis, Marx identified two primary classes within the capitalist mode of production. The first group is the bourgeoisie, which consists of the ruling class. They own the means of production, such as factories, land, and tools. The second group is the proletariat, which is the working class. These individuals do not own the means of production. Instead, they must sell their labor power to the bourgeoisie to earn wages.

Marx argued that the interests of these two groups are fundamentally opposed.

Marx's life was marked by intense study and political struggle. He was born on May 5, 1818, in Trier, part of the Kingdom of Prussia.

During his youth, he was part of the Young Hegelians. This group of radical thinkers used philosophy to critique religion and politics. His early career included working as a journalist for the Rhineland News.

A major turning point occurred in 1844 when Marx met Friedrich Engels in Paris.

Engels became Marx's closest friend and a vital collaborator. Together, they wrote the famous pamphlet, The Communist Manifesto, in 1848. This document laid out a program for revolution to change society. Marx later moved to London, where he lived for many years. There, he worked with the International Workingmen's Association. He spent much of his later life writing his massive three-volume critique of political economy, titled Das Kapital.

Marx predicted that capitalism would eventually face self-destruction due to its own internal tensions. He believed these tensions would lead to the development of class consciousness among workers. This consciousness would drive the proletariat to seize political power. This transition would replace capitalism with a socialist mode of production. Ultimately, Marx envisioned a classless, communist society. In this society, producers would exist in a free association. This vision was intended to bring about socio-economic emancipation for all.

The impact of Marx's work is visible in many parts of history. His ideas served as the guiding ideology for many 20th-century revolutions. These movements led to the creation of various communist states.

While his work has been heavily criticized, it remains highly influential. Marxism-Leninism is one example of a school of thought derived from his ideas. His economic theories also continue to influence modern studies of labor and capital. Furthermore, many people consider him a principal architect of modern sociology.

His legacy remains a subject of intense debate among historians and economists. Some see his work as a tool for liberation, while others see it as a source of conflict. Regardless of the viewpoint, his analysis of class and production remains central to social science. He fundamentally changed how we view the connection between money, power, and human history.
