The posterior portion of the skull was also very deep. 
In 2009, researchers Paul Sereno and Hans Larsson first described the genus. They published their findings in a monograph in the journal ZooKeys. They studied Kaprosuchus alongside other Saharan crocodyliforms like Anatosuchus and Laganosuchus. Because of its appearance, they gave it the nickname "BoarCroc." This discovery helped scientists group Kaprosuchus within the family Mahajangasuchidae. This family includes the related species Mahajangasuchus insignis from Madagascar. 
There has been much debate regarding the paleobiology of Kaprosuchus. Scientists once believed it was a primarily terrestrial predator. This idea was based on the positioning of its orbits, or eye sockets. The orbits opened laterally and were angled slightly forward. This arrangement suggests stereoscopic vision, which allows for an overlap in the visual field to see depth. Sharp, straight teeth and a long retroarticular process in the lower jaw also supported the idea of land hunting. The long process likely allowed the jaws to open quickly with a large gape. 
However, more recent studies suggest Kaprosuchus may have been semiaquatic. This means it lived both on land and in the water. This shift in thinking comes from looking at its relatives. For example, Mahajangasuchus is suggested to be a primarily aquatic predator. Many researchers believe Mahajangasuchids show cranial adaptations found in definitively semiaquatic crocodylomorphs. These adaptations include specific snout shapes and the position of the eyes and nostrils. This shows how much scientific understanding can change as new research is conducted.
