Chiyo began writing these poems at age seven. By age seventeen, she was popular across Japan. She studied under poets who knew Matsuo Bashō. Bashō was a very great poet. Chiyo learned from him but found her own voice. She did not just copy his style. She wrote about nature and the world. Her poems show how people and nature are one. One famous poem is about a morning glory flower. In it, she finds a bucket caught in vines. She chooses to ask for water instead of pulling the flower.
