Kachinas are spirit beings in Pueblo cultures. These cultures are in the southwest of the United States. Many people belong to the Hopi or Zuni tribes.

Kachinas can represent many things in the world. They might be the sun, the wind, or even corn. They can also be ancestors or animals. Some people believe kachinas have families just like humans. They have parents, siblings, and children.

These spirits are very powerful. People show them respect to ask for help. Kachinas might bring rain, healing, or protection. The Hopi believe kachinas live on the San Francisco Peaks. They visit villages during the first half of the year.

People use three main ways to honor them. First, there are the spirits themselves. Second, men dress up as kachinas for dances. When they wear masks, they act as the spirit. Third, there are kachina dolls.

These dolls are carved from wood. They are not toys for play. Instead, they help children learn about the spirits. Children hang the dolls in their homes to study them. This helps them know what each kachina looks like.
