Kōnosuke Matsushita was a legendary Japanese industrialist. He founded Panasonic, which became one of the largest consumer electronics companies in the world. In Japan, his leadership was so respected that he earned the nickname "the God of Management."

His life story shows how a person can build a global empire from a small basement workshop through innovation and careful planning.

Matsushita was born on November 27, 1894, in Wasamura. His father was a wealthy landlord in the farming village of Wasa. After leaving school, Matsushita moved to Osaka to work as an apprentice in a barbecue restaurant. That business failed within a year, forcing him to find new work. He eventually joined the Osaka Electric Light Company, an electrical utility company. He worked his way up and was promoted to electrical inspector by age 22. During this time, he also married Mumeno Iue.

In 1917, Matsushita decided to start his own business. He lacked formal education, manufacturing experience, and capital, which is the money needed to start a company. He set up a small shop in a basement tenement. He worked there with his wife, his brother-in-law, and several assistants. At first, he struggled because he only offered one type of product to wholesalers. This lack of variety caused many assistants to leave. The company faced bankruptcy, and Matsushita even had to pawn his wife's kimono to find money.

Success finally arrived through specific technical innovations. First, the company received a large order for one thousand insulator plates for electric fans. This allowed him to continue making his improved light sockets. These sockets became popular because they were higher quality and less expensive than other products. Matsushita also invented a more efficient battery-powered bicycle lamp. Before this, bicycle lamps used candles or oil and only lasted about three hours. His new oval lamp used a battery and a lightbulb to provide better illumination.

Matsushita realized that making a great product was not enough for a company to grow. He learned that a business needs effective distribution channels to reach customers. He began focusing more on building a sales force than just manufacturing goods. In 1929, he reorganized the company into a parent company with specialized divisions. These divisions focused on three main products: radios, electrical sockets, and bicycle lamps and batteries. He also created regional offices to coordinate sales and manufacturing. This ensured that production was always aligned with what the market actually demanded.

After World War II, the US occupation of Japan changed how businesses worked. General Douglas MacArthur decided to break up the large business conglomerates known as zaibatsu. Matsushita was at risk of losing his position as president. However, 15,000 of his employees signed a petition to save him. In 1947, he helped his brother-in-law, Toshio, start a business by lending him a manufacturing plant. This business eventually became Sanyo Electric. By the period between 1950 and 1973, Matsushita's company was one of the world's largest manufacturers of electrical goods.

Matsushita's influence extended far beyond electronics. He was a prolific writer and published 44 books on his social and commercial philosophies. One of his books, "Developing A Road To Peace And Happiness Through Prosperity," sold over four million copies. In 1979, he founded the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management to train future Japanese leaders. He received many high honors, including the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers in 1987.

When he passed away from pneumonia on April 27, 1989, at age 94, he left a massive legacy. He had personal assets worth US$3 billion. He also left behind a company with US$42 billion in revenue. His family continued to be involved in business and industry. His grandson, Hiro Matsushita, became the chairman of a company in Kobe, Japan. The brands Matsushita helped build, like Panasonic and Technics, remain famous worldwide today.
