Jupiter was the supreme deity in the ancient Roman religion.

He served as the king of the gods and the ruler of the sky. Throughout the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, he was the chief deity of the state religion. This dominance lasted until Christianity became the primary religion of the Empire. Many scholars believe his name originated from Proto-Italic terms meaning "sky father."

This connects him to the Greek god Zeus. In the Greek-influenced tradition, Jupiter was the brother of Neptune and Pluto. These three brothers presided over the sky, the waters, and the underworld respectively.

Jupiter possessed specific symbols that represented his divine authority. His primary implement was the thunderbolt.

His sacred animal was the eagle, which held precedence over other birds in the taking of auspices.

The eagle eventually became a common symbol for the Roman army, known as the Aquila. In Roman art and coinage, these symbols were often combined. Artists frequently depicted an eagle clutching a thunderbolt in its claws. His sacred tree was the oak.

As the god of the sky, Jupiter functioned as a divine witness to oaths. Romans believed that justice and good government depended on this sacred trust. He was the central guardian of the state within the Capitoline Triad. This group included Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, located on the Capitoline Hill. Jupiter personified the divine authority of Rome's highest offices and its external relations. The Romans believed they held supremacy because they honored him more than any other people.

Specific rituals were used to honor Jupiter and secure his support. During the annual feriae of the Capitol in September, consuls honored him. They would sacrifice a white ox with gilded horns to show gratitude. Triumphal generals also made offerings at the feet of his statue. Some scholars suggest the general in a triumph might have impersonated Jupiter. This is evidenced by the fact that they used his specific insignia. These included the sceptre and the toga palmata.

The religious service of Jupiter involved specialized groups of priests. The Flamen Dialis was the highest-ranking member of the flamines. This was a college of fifteen priests dedicated to specific deities. The Flamen Dialis lived under many strict ritual prohibitions to maintain purity. He could not ride a horse or see the army outside the city boundaries. He was also forbidden from contacting anything related to death, such as corpses or funerals.

These rules reflected the fullness of life associated with the god.

His wife, the Flaminica Dialis, also held important religious duties. She presided over the sacrifice of a ram on the nundinae, which were market days. The couple had to marry through a specific ritual called confarreatio. This ritual involved the sacrifice of spelt bread to Jupiter Farreus. Other officials, known as augurs, were responsible for interpreting Jupiter's will. They performed ceremonies called auguria to guide the state.

These augurs were considered essential to the existence of the Roman State.

Jupiter also played a role in international law and diplomacy. The fetials were a college of twenty men who managed religious affairs regarding foreign states. They applied the fetial law to ensure the gods protected Rome's international relations. In these rites, they invoked Jupiter as a witness to any treaty violations. If war was declared, the fetial would call upon Jupiter to witness the process. This occurred within a 33-day period. Jupiter acted as the divine defender of good faith in these complex legal procedures.
