Junot Díaz is a famous writer. He was born in the Dominican Republic. He moved to New Jersey when he was six years old.

As a boy, he loved to read. He walked four miles to get books from the library. Learning English was very hard for him. He felt it was a bad experience at first. He even had to take special classes to help him learn.

To pay for college, he worked many jobs. He pumped gas and washed dishes. He also delivered heavy pool tables.

Díaz writes about the immigrant experience. This means he writes about people moving to new lands. He created a character named Yunior. Yunior tells many of his stories.

His book, *The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao*, won a Pulitzer Prize. This is a very big honor for writers. In 2012, he won a MacArthur Fellowship. People call this a "Genius Grant."

Today, he teaches writing at MIT. He also helps other writers of color through a special group. He uses his skill to share important stories with the world.
