Julius Maada Bio is a prominent Sierra Leonean politician and a retired military officer.
Bio was born on May 12, 1964, in the village of Tihun. This village is located in the Sogbini Chiefdom within the Bonthe District. He was the 33rd of 35 children born to Sherbro Paramount Chief Charlie Bio II. Bio grew up in a large family and attended several different schools. He finished his primary education at the Holy Family Primary School in Pujehun. Later, he attended the Bo Government Secondary School, where he served as a school prefect. He graduated from this boarding school in 1984 at the age of 20.
After his secondary education, Bio entered the military to pursue a career as an officer. He enrolled in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces military academy near Freetown. He graduated as a Second Lieutenant in October 1987. His early military roles included serving at the Lungi Garrison and in the Kambia District. He also trained with United Nations forces in aviation security. In 1990, he was deployed to Liberia as part of ECOMOG, a West African peacekeeping force. This mission was intended to maintain peace during the Liberian civil war.
Bio's involvement in military governance began with a coup in 1992. A group of young soldiers, including Bio, overthrew the government of President Joseph Saidu Momoh. This group formed the National Provisional Ruling Council, also known as the NPRC. Bio held several important roles within this council, including Secretary of State. In January 1996, Bio led another coup that removed Captain Valentine Strasser from power. At only 32 years old, Bio became the military head of state. He eventually handed power to Ahmad Tejan Kabbah following the 1996 presidential election.
Following his military service, Bio moved to the United States for several years. He earned a master's degree in International Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C. He returned to Sierra Leone in 2005 to enter the political arena. Bio joined the Sierra Leone People's Party, or SLPP. He first ran for president in 2012 but lost to the incumbent, Ernest Bai Koroma. This crisis led to violent protests in August 2022, which resulted in several deaths. Bio's government has also been involved in legal disputes with the previous administration. His administration accused former President Koroma of widespread financial corruption and mismanagement. In September 2023, the government also had to manage a failed coup attempt intended to overthrow his presidency. Despite these tensions, Bio was re-elected in 2023, though international observers noted concerns regarding election transparency.
