Juan Gris was a highly influential Spanish painter. He was a central figure in the Cubist movement. Cubism is an artistic style that uses geometric shapes to represent subjects. Gris is known for making this style look distinctive and orderly. His work helped bridge the gap between different artistic ideas. He brought a sense of math and logic to the canvas. This made his art feel very clear and measurable.

Gris used a very specific process to create his paintings. He began with an abstract armature, which is a structural framework. This geometric skeleton served as his starting point. He used math to plan how shapes would fit together. He often used a grid structure to organize the composition. This allowed him to control the finer details of the image. By using this method, he could blend objects into their backgrounds. This created a unified whole where everything felt connected.

His artistic career can be divided into different technical stages. At first, he practiced Analytical Cubism. This is a style where objects are broken down into many parts. He actually coined this specific term himself. After 1913, he moved toward Synthetic Cubism. In this stage, he used a technique called papier collé, or collage. This involved gluing pieces of paper onto the surface. He also entered a period known as Crystal Cubism. This period featured even simpler geometric structures.

Gris was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1887. He originally studied engineering at the Madrid School of Arts and Sciences. He later studied painting with José Moreno Carbonero. In 1906, he moved to Paris to pursue art. He lived in a famous building called the Bateau-Lavoir. There, he became friends with artists like Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. He worked as a satirical cartoonist before painting seriously in 1911. This transition changed the course of his life and career.

The significance of his work is seen in its lasting influence. His preference for order influenced the Purist style. This style was used by artists like Amédée Ozenfant. He also influenced the post-war "return to order" movement. His paintings are now highly valued by collectors. One of his works sold for $57.1 million. This was a record price for his art. Other famous works have sold for over $31 million. His art remains a major part of modern history.

Gris produced many notable works throughout his life. He created a sculpture called Harlequin in 1917. He also designed sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes in 1924. His painting "Woman with Mandolin, after Corot" shows his geometric skill. Another famous piece is "Still Life before an Open Window, Place Ravignan." These works show how he merged subjects with their settings. He used bright, harmonious colors instead of dark tones. This made his version of Cubism very unique.

His life ended in 1927 due to kidney failure. He died in Boulogne-sur-Seine at the age of 40. He left behind his wife, Josette, and his son, Georges. Even though his life was short, his impact was huge. He connected the ideas of math, color, and structure. His work helped define how modern art looks. Today, his paintings are kept in museums all over the world. He remains a master of the Cubist style.
