Have you ever wondered how your phone saves so many photos?

Computers use a special method called JPEG to store digital images. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. This was the name of the group that created the standard. It is a type of lossy compression. This means the computer makes files smaller by leaving some data out.

You can choose how much to shrink a file. A smaller file takes up less storage space. However, shrinking it too much can make the picture look fuzzy.

How does this shrinking work?

JPEG process

The process uses a math tool called the discrete cosine transform, or DCT. The DCT turns parts of an image into a different form. This makes it easier to save space. The computer looks at small 8x8 blocks of pixels.

It uses the DCT to change these blocks into a stream of bytes. This allows the computer to pack the information tightly. When you want to see the picture, the computer decompresses it back into an image. This way, you can view your photos easily.

Scientists worked on these ideas long before JPEG was released. Nasir Ahmed first proposed the DCT as a way to compress images in 1972. He published this work with T. Natarajan and K. R. Rao in 1974. The Joint Photographic Experts Group was organized in 1986. They worked on the standard during the late 1980s. They finally published the JPEG standard in 1992.

This standard helped digital photos spread across the Internet. It even helped the rise of social media.

JPEG is a very important tool in our digital world. As of 2015, several billion JPEG images were produced every single day. It is the most widely used digital image format on Earth. Many different file formats use JPEG compression. One common version is JPEG/Exif, which digital cameras often use. Another version is JPEG/JFIF, which is common on the World Wide Web.

These files usually end with the extension .jpg or .jpeg. Some formats can even hold huge images up to 4 gigapixels.

Think about how you send a message to a friend.

If the message were too long, it might take a long time to send. JPEG acts like a way to summarize that message. It keeps the most important parts so your friend understands it. But it leaves out the tiny details that don't matter much. This makes the "message" much faster to travel. Because of this, we can share beautiful photos instantly with people all over the world.
