Joseph Bazalgette was a famous British civil engineer.

He lived in the 1800s. At that time, London had a big problem. Waste flowed through the streets and into the River Thames. This caused a bad smell called the Great Stink in 1858. It also made many people very sick with cholera.

Joseph had a grand plan to fix this. He built a massive network of underground tunnels. These are called sewers.

He used strong bricks and Portland cement to make them. He also built large pumping stations to move the waste.

These stations helped push waste away from the city.

People thought bad air caused the sickness. Joseph's tunnels actually worked because they cleaned the water. This helped stop the cholera outbreaks. His design was so good that it still helps London today. Joseph was even knighted by Queen Victoria. He also designed the Hammersmith Bridge.
