He is considered a national hero in Cuba. This is because he fought for Cuba to be free from the Spanish Empire. Many people call him the "Apostle of Cuban Independence." He was also a very important figure in Latin American literature. Martí was a man of many talents. He worked as a journalist, a translator, and a professor. He also served as a publisher. His life was dedicated to the idea of liberty. He wanted political independence for Cuba. He also wanted intellectual independence for all Spanish Americans.

His parents were Spanish. His father, Mariano Martí Navarro, was from Valencia. His mother, Leonor Pérez Cabrera, was from the Canary Islands. When Martí was four, his family moved to Spain. They returned to Cuba two years later. Martí attended public school in the Santa Clara neighborhood. During his youth, he developed a strong social conscience. He was influenced by his teacher, Mendive. He was also close to his friend, Fermín Valdés Domínguez. In 1865, Martí and other students mourned the death of Abraham Lincoln. They felt deep pain because Lincoln had helped end slavery in the United States. This event helped shape Martí's views on freedom.

As a teenager, Martí began to express his political ideas through writing.

In 1869, he published his first political writings. He also wrote a patriotic drama called "Abdala." This play was about a fictional country named Nubia. It described a struggle for liberation. At age 16, Martí faced great hardship. The Spanish government arrested him for treason and bribery. They found a letter he had written to a friend. Martí was sentenced to six years in prison. He became very ill while in jail. The chains used to bind him injured his legs. Eventually, the authorities moved him to Isla de Pinos. Later, they decided to exile him to Spain.

Martí lived much of his adult life in exile.

He arrived in Cádiz, Spain, in 1871. He then moved to Madrid to study law. While in Madrid, he was very active in the Cuban independence movement. He wrote articles for many newspapers. One important pamphlet was titled "Political Imprisonment in Cuba." He wrote this to show the world how the Spanish government treated people in Cuba. In 1873, Martí hung the Cuban flag from his balcony in Madrid. This was a bold act of protest. He also responded to the proclamation of the First Spanish Republic. He argued that the new republic was being hypocritical. He believed it should grant independence to Cuba.

Martí continued his travels and his studies across different countries.

He graduated with degrees in Civil Law and Canon Law. He lived in Zaragoza and Paris. In Paris, he met the famous poet Victor Hugo. Martí also traveled to Mexico and Guatemala. In Mexico City, he lived on Calle Moneda. He worked on the editorial staff of the magazine *Revista Universal*. He used his time in Mexico to advocate for Cuban independence. He wrote many articles to counter arguments against the Cuban cause. His writing helped connect the Cuban struggle to the rest of the world.

Martí was a key organizer for the Cuban War of Independence. He helped design the Cuban Revolutionary Party. This party helped create the ideology for the fight against Spain. He worked hard to unite the Cuban community living in exile. This was especially important for the community in Florida. His leadership helped prepare the way for the war. Sadly, Martí did not live to see the end of the conflict. He died in military action on May 19, 1895. He fell during the Battle of Dos Ríos. His death became a powerful cry for independence. It motivated both revolutionaries and people who had been hesitant to fight.

Today, Martí's influence is seen in many places.

This song is now a major symbol of Cuba. After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, his ideas became very important in Cuban politics. He is remembered as a martyr for his country. His life shows how words and ideas can lead to massive historical changes.
