He was a master of a writing style called modernismo. This style is known for being elegant and very artistic. Rodó was a leading thinker for this group of writers. He spent much of his life sharing big ideas. He wrote many books and essays to help people think. His words helped shape the culture of Latin America.

His most famous book is an essay called Ariel, written in 1900.

In this work, he uses characters from a play by William Shakespeare. He uses a character named Ariel to represent beauty and the spirit. He uses a character named Caliban to show the opposite side. Rodó uses these characters to debate the future of history. He wrote this as a special message for young people. He wanted them to value the classical western tradition.

Rodó had many important friends who were also great thinkers. He wrote letters to famous people like Leopoldo Alas in Spain. He also talked with José de la Riva-Agüero in Peru. Most importantly, he was close with Rubén Darío. Darío was a very influential Latin American poet. These friendships helped Rodó spread his modernista ideas. He used his refined writing style to connect with them.

Rodó worried about how modern life was changing people. He spoke out against an idea called utilitarianism. This was the belief that being useful was the most important thing. He feared that doing the same small job every day could hurt the spirit. He thought specialization made people feel incomplete. He also warned against something he called "nordomanía." This was a strong attraction to North American ways and materials.

Rodó believed that people should protect their own regional identity. He wanted youth to keep their unique cultural roots strong. He thought art and learning could help enrich the human spirit. His ideas remain very important in Latin American culture today. Even his name is part of the landscape in his home. One of the main parks in Montevideo is named Parque Rodó.
