He was a leader in a style of writing called modernismo. This style is known for being elegant and artistic. Rodó wrote many books and essays during his life.

His most famous work is an essay called Ariel. In this book, he uses characters from a play by William Shakespeare. He uses Ariel to represent beauty and the human spirit. He uses Caliban to represent a different side of nature. Rodó wanted young people in Latin America to value their own culture. He also wanted them to focus on art and learning.

Rodó worried about how people worked. He did not want people to do only one small job. He thought doing the same thing every day could hurt the spirit. He called this idea utilitarianism. He also warned about nordomanía. This was his word for being too attracted to North American ways. He believed people should keep their own regional identity. Today, a large park in Montevideo is named Parque Rodó to honor him.
