He was born in Madrid in 1832. As a boy, he loved math. He also loved reading great books. He moved to Madrid at age fourteen to study. He became a civil engineer. He was the top student in his class.

Echegaray was a very busy person. He taught math at a school. He also worked in the government. He served as a minister for education and finance. But his heart truly belonged to the theater. He wrote many plays for the stage.

His stories often focused on duty and right from wrong. His most famous play was El gran Galeoto. This play shows how gossip can hurt a person's happiness. Because his writing was so good, he won a Nobel Prize in 1904. He was the first person from Spain to win this prize.

Even when he was old, he did not stop working. At age 83, he said he could not die yet. He wanted more time to write books about math and physics. He stayed active until he died in 1916.
