His crimes are among the most significant in United States legal history. Because he performed as a clown in public, he became known as the "Killer Clown."

Gacy had a specific method for committing his crimes. He typically lured his victims to his ranch-style house. Once they were inside, he would trick them into using handcuffs. He told them he was going to demonstrate a magic trick.

After they were restrained, he would rape and torture them. He killed his victims through asphyxiation or strangulation with a garrote. Most of these murders occurred inside his own home.

Investigators found that Gacy hid many of his victims in his house. He buried twenty-six victims in the crawl space beneath his home.

This discovery followed a police investigation into a missing teenager. The disappearance of Robert Piest led to Gacy's arrest on December 21, 1978.

Gacy's early life was marked by significant hardship and abuse. He was born on March 17, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. His father was an auto repair machinist and a World War I veteran. The relationship between Gacy and his father was very difficult. His father was verbally and physically abusive toward the family. Gacy recalled being beaten at age four for a mistake with car parts. This environment caused Gacy to feel he was never good enough.

As a young man, Gacy attempted to build a successful career. He worked as a salesman and a department manager for a shoe company. He later moved to Waterloo, Iowa, to manage Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.

During this time, he was very active in the Jaycees, a community organization. He even served as the vice-president of the Waterloo Jaycees. He was highly regarded by the group for his fundraising efforts.

However, Gacy had a history of criminal behavior before his major crimes. In 1968, he was arrested for the sexual assault of a teenager. He was charged with sodomy and hiring someone to intimidate a witness.

Gacy was convicted of sodomy and sentenced to ten years in prison. He served eighteen months at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. While in prison, he became a model prisoner and even led an inmate chapter of the Jaycees.

After his arrest in 1978, Gacy faced a major legal trial. He was convicted of thirty-three murders by one individual. This conviction covered a massive number of homicides for a single person. On March 13, 1980, he was sentenced to death. Gacy was eventually executed by lethal injection at Stateville Correctional Center. He died on May 10, 1994. His case remains a significant part of American criminal history.
