John Vincent Atanasoff was a brilliant American physicist and inventor.

He is best known for inventing the first electronic digital computer. This invention changed how we use machines to solve problems. He began his important work in the 1930s at Iowa State College. This school is known today as Iowa State University. His discovery helped pave the way for all modern computers. Even though he was a scientist, his journey started with a simple need for better tools.

Atanasoff wanted to find faster ways to do math.

While writing his doctoral thesis, he used a mechanical Monroe calculator. He found that using this machine was a very hard job. He wanted a digital solution that was faster than gears. In 1939, he received a grant of $650 to help him. He worked with a graduate student named Clifford Berry. Together, they built a prototype called the Atanasoff–Berry Computer, or ABC. This machine used vacuum tubes for digital computation. It also used binary math and Boolean logic to solve equations. The machine used a special memory made of capacitors. This worked in a way similar to the DRAM memory used in computers today.

Atanasoff was born on October 4, 1903, in Hamilton, New York. His father, Ivan Atanasov, was an electrical engineer from Bulgaria. His mother, Iva Lucena Purdy, was a teacher of mathematics.

His parents helped him develop a sense of curiosity. He was very smart at a young age. At age nine, he already knew how to use a slide rule. He finished high school in only two years. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida in 1925. Later, he earned a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1930.

For many years, there were big arguments about who invented the computer.

Other people had patents on computer parts. In 1954, an attorney asked Atanasoff for help with a legal case. This led to a famous lawsuit called Honeywell v. Sperry Rand. In 1973, a federal judge made a final decision. Judge Earl R. Larson ruled that Atanasoff was the true inventor. The judge said that others had derived their ideas from Atanasoff. This was a very important moment for his legacy. It proved that his work with the ABC was the first of its kind.

Atanasoff's life was full of many different achievements. He lived until 1995 and received many high honors. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush gave him the National Medal of Technology.

Many things in the world are named after him today. There is an asteroid named 3546 Atanasoff. There is also a peak in Antarctica called Atanasoff Nunatak. In Bulgaria, schools and even a tournament for computer science use his name. His work connects the old way of using gears to the modern world of digital machines. He showed us how electricity could do the work of math.
