He lived during a time when the kings of England and Scotland joined together. Speed wanted to show this new union through his work. He drew maps and wrote histories of the Kingdoms of Great Britain. His work helped people understand their shared national identity. He was one of the most well-known mapmakers in England.

Speed worked in a very careful way to make his maps. He did not just start from scratch. He studied older maps made by people like Christopher Saxton and John Norden. He improved them by adding new details like hundred-boundaries. He also drew many small plans of towns and cities to put inside his maps.

He even created a map of the biblical land of Canaan in 1595. This showed his great skill at drawing many different things.

Speed was born in a village called Farndon in Cheshire. His family was well-to-do and lived in London. His father was a member of the Merchant Taylors' Company.

John followed his father into this business for a while. Later, a man named Sir Fulke Greville helped him. Greville gave him money so he could focus only on his research. This support allowed Speed to become a great scholar.

Speed produced many important books and maps. In 1611, he published a famous atlas and history of Great Britain.

He also worked on family trees for the Bible. These were included in the first editions of the King James Bible. He was even given a job as a Waiter, which is a type of customs officer. In 1627, he worked on a world atlas called his Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World.

Even when life was hard, Speed kept working. He became blind by April 1626. He also suffered from a painful medical condition called the stone. He died in July 1629 at the age of 77 or 78.
