He lived during the same time as William Shakespeare. Webster is known for writing very dark and serious stories. These stories often showed the harder sides of human nature. Many people call his work masterpieces of the English stage. His plays are often complex and require deep thought to understand. Even though his life is a bit of a mystery, his writing remains powerful.

Webster's plays worked in different ways depending on the theater.

He wrote a play called The White Devil for the Red Bull Theatre. This was an open-air theater for working-class audiences. That play was very intellectual and did not become a hit there. Later, he wrote The Duchess of Malfi for the King's Men. This play was likely performed in the Blackfriars Theatre. This was a smaller indoor space with artificial light and music. These settings changed how the audience felt the story.

We do not know the exact dates of Webster's birth or death.

He helped write many history plays and comedies. Some of these were titled Westward Ho and Northward Ho. He also collaborated on a play called Caesar's Fall. He worked with writers like Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton. One of his famous tragedies, The White Devil, was published in 1612. His other great work, The Duchess of Malfi, was published in 1622. He even wrote a tragicomedy called The Devil's Law Case.

Today, people still find great value in Webster's dark vision.

In the 20th century, many critics began to love his plays again. They felt his stories matched the difficult times of modern wars. The poet T. S. Eliot once described his work beautifully. He said Webster saw "the skull beneath the skin." This means he looked at the truth behind human faces. His characters, like the brave Duchess, still shine in the darkness. His influence can even be found in modern books and films.
