Bonsai is the art of growing tiny trees. He learned this skill from his grandfather.

John was born in Colorado. As a boy, he moved to Japan. There, he studied bonsai very closely. He later moved back to the United States. He lived in Los Angeles with his wife and three sons. John liked to use trees from Southern California. This helped many people in the West love bonsai art. In 1950, he helped start the California Bonsai Society.

John was a great teacher. He wrote two books about bonsai. Many artists look to these books for help. He also wrote a book of proverbs. This book was called "Even Monkeys Fall Out of Trees." It means even a master can make a mistake.

One of his best works is called Goshin. This name means "protector of the spirit."
