He is best known for commanding the American Expeditionary Forces, or AEF, during World War I. This role made him a central figure in global history from 1917 to 1920. Pershing eventually achieved the rank of General of the Armies. This is the highest possible rank in the United States Army.

He was the only American to reach this rank during his own lifetime. His leadership shaped the modern military and influenced many future leaders.

Pershing's early life began on a farm near Laclede, Missouri, in 1860.

His father was a farmer and a store owner. After finishing high school in 1878, Pershing worked as a teacher for local African American children. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1880 from a school in Kirksville, Missouri. He applied to the United States Military Academy at West Point to receive a better education.

At West Point, he rose to the rank of First Captain, the highest cadet position. He graduated in 1886 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

His early military career involved service in several different territories and conflicts. He served with the 6th Cavalry in the New Mexico Territory and South Dakota. During this time, he participated in campaigns involving the Apache and the Lakota people. In 1893, while working as a professor in Nebraska, he earned a law degree.

During World War I, Pershing faced a major challenge in how to use American troops.

British and French leaders wanted to use American soldiers as replacement units for their own armies. Pershing resisted these demands. He insisted that the AEF operate as a single, independent unit under his command. While some American units did fight under British or Australian command, Pershing kept the main force together. He also allowed segregated all-Black units to be integrated with the French Army.

Pershing led his troops through several intense periods of combat. His soldiers saw serious battle at places like Cantigny, Belleau Wood, and Soissons in 1918. To move troops to France quickly, they left heavy equipment behind and used British and French tanks and planes. In September 1918, his First Army took control of the St. Mihiel salient. This was a piece of territory the German Army had held for three years.

Later, he moved roughly 600,000 soldiers into the Argonne Forest for the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. This fight lasted for 47 days and helped lead to the German armistice.

Despite his successes, Pershing's methods faced significant criticism from historians and other commanders. Some experts argue that his reliance on frontal assaults caused unnecessarily high American casualties. These are attacks where soldiers charge directly at enemy lines. He was also questioned regarding his actions on the final day of the war. Pershing did not approve of the armistice, and he did not tell his commanders to stop offensive actions before the ceasefire. On November 11, 1918, there were nearly 11,000 casualties, including those dead, missing, or injured. This number was actually higher than the casualties on the first day of the D-Day invasion in 1944.

Pershing's influence extended far beyond his own era of service. He served as a mentor to the generation of generals who led the United States in World War II. This group included famous leaders like Dwight D. Eisenhower, George S. Patton, and Douglas MacArthur.
