Grisham’s journey to becoming a writer involved many different jobs and studies. As a teenager, he worked at a plant nursery watering bushes for $1.00 an hour. He also worked for a plumbing contractor and on a highway asphalt crew. He even worked as a sales clerk in a department store. These early experiences helped shape his view of the world. Later, he studied hard to become a lawyer. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1977 with a degree in accounting.

Before he was a full-time writer, Grisham had a career in law and politics. He earned a law degree from the University of Mississippi in 1981. He practiced criminal law for about ten years. Grisham also served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990. He represented the 7th District, which included DeSoto County. While in politics, he became interested in education reform. He eventually decided to focus on writing stories instead of practicing law.

His first novel, A Time to Kill, was published in June 1989. He spent four years writing this first book. It was a hard start because 28 different publishers rejected his work. However, a small publisher named Wynwood Press finally agreed to print 5,000 copies. His second book, The Firm, became a massive success. It sold more than seven million copies and stayed on the bestseller list for 47 weeks. Many of his stories have since been turned into famous movies.

Grisham also writes stories specifically for younger readers. He created a series about a 13-year-old boy named Theodore Boone. Theodore gives legal advice to his classmates about many different things. Grisham was inspired to write these books by his daughter, Shea. He hopes these stories will interest children and teach them about the law. He also writes about the rural South in books like A Painted House. These stories often use settings that feel very real and familiar.
