Whittier worked hard to share his ideas through many ways. He began by writing poems as a young man. His sister Mary sent his first poem to a newspaper. Later, he worked as a shoemaker to pay for his school. He also served as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. As he grew up, he became an editor for several newspapers.

He grew up on a farm with his parents and siblings. The farm did not make much money to help the family. As a boy, he discovered he was color-blind. He could not tell the difference between ripe and unripe strawberries. He studied his father's books on Quakerism to learn about his faith. These books became the foundation for how he saw the world.

His life was filled with important dates and big changes. In 1833, he signed the Anti-Slavery Declaration. This was one of the most significant actions of his life. He also helped start the Liberty Party in 1839. During his travels, he sometimes faced angry crowds. Some people were so upset that they threw stones at him. In 1866, he published a very successful book called Snow-Bound.
