Making a film involves many different technical and creative roles. Carpenter frequently handles multiple responsibilities himself to maintain his vision. For his 1974 science-fiction comedy, Dark Star, he acted as writer, director, producer, and composer. His collaborator Dan O'Bannon handled acting and special effects. In the 1976 thriller Assault on Precinct 13, Carpenter also served as the film editor. He used the pseudonym "John T. Chance" for his editing work. This film was significant because it was the first time he worked on a professional schedule.

Carpenter's career includes several distinct types of films. Some of his productions were massive commercial successes from the start. For example, Halloween (1978) was a major hit that helped develop the slasher genre. Other films are categorized as cult classics. These are movies that gain deep popularity over time among dedicated fans. Examples include Dark Star, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. He also created the "Apocalypse Trilogy." This group of films includes The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness. These stories are linked by their bleak endings for the characters.

His interest in cinema began during his childhood in Kentucky.

He grew up in a log cabin on a university campus. He was fascinated by westerns and high-budget science fiction films. Before starting high school, he used an 8 mm camera to make short horror films. In 1962, he used claymation to create a film called Godzilla vs. Gorgo. He eventually moved to California to study at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He left the university during his final semester to film his first feature movie.

Financial success and production scale varied greatly throughout his career. Halloween was made with a small budget of only $300,000. The actors even provided their own costumes due to these limited funds. Despite the low cost, the film grossed more than $65 million initially. This made it one of the most successful independent films ever made. In contrast, his film The Fog (1980) had a budget of $1,000,000. It went on to gross over $21,000,000 in the United States alone.

Escape from New York (1981) also saw significant commercial success, grossing over $25 million.

Music is a vital part of the Carpenter experience. He usually composes or co-composes the musical scores for his own films. His "Halloween Theme" is so famous it is recognizable even without the movie. He won a Saturn Award for Best Music for his work on Vampires in 1998. Beyond film scores, he has released five studio albums. These include the Lost Themes series, which spans from 2015 to 2024.
