John Caldwell Calhoun was a famous American leader who lived a long and busy life.

He was born on March 18, 1782, in South Carolina. His family had roots in Ireland and moved to the American frontier. When he was only 14 years old, he had to manage many family farms. This was a big job for a young person. He eventually went to Yale College in Connecticut to study. He worked very hard and graduated as the valedictorian in 1804.

After college, he studied law and became a lawyer.

Calhoun held many important jobs in the United States government. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1810. During the War of 1812, he was a leader known as a "War Hawk." This meant he strongly supported fighting against Britain. He worked hard to find money and troops for the war. Later, he served as the Secretary of War under President James Monroe. He helped organize and modernize the War Department to make it better.

He also served as the seventh vice president of the United States.

His time as vice president lasted from 1825 to 1832. He served under two different presidents, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. This was a rare thing for a vice president to do. However, he had a difficult relationship with President Jackson. They disagreed about many things, including a crisis over taxes called nullification. Because of these disagreements, Calhoun resigned from his job as vice president in 1832. He then moved to the Senate to continue his work.

As he grew older, Calhoun's political ideas changed quite a bit. At first, he wanted a strong national government to help the whole country. Later, he became a leader for states' rights. He believed individual states should have more power than the national government. He also became a very outspoken defender of slavery. He argued that slavery was a "positive good" for everyone involved.

This was a very controversial and firm belief. People began to call him the "cast-iron man" because he would not change his mind.

Calhoun's ideas had a huge impact on the history of America. His views on states' rights and slavery helped lead toward the secession of Southern states. This happened in 1860 and 1861, which led to the Civil War. He lived at a place called Fort Hill in South Carolina.

He stayed active in politics until he died of tuberculosis in 1850. He was considered one of the three great leaders in Congress at that time. His life shows how much one person's choices can shape a nation.
